Owner Zdenka Kiric has been in the Arts and Crafts industry in Sint Maarten for over 20 years. She left Croatia to escape the war in 1989, bought a 28-foot monohull with her husband, and sailed across the Atlantic. Unfortunately, some weeks after arriving in Sint Maarten in 1995, Hurricane Luis destroyed their boat.
With $80 in her pocket and some cans of tuna left to eat, Zdenka began creating bicycles and other art out of wire, selling them on the pier in Philipsburg.
When this helped her sustain herself, she started her own company, creating a tableware collection dressed up with wire and beads, which was soon selling in over 20 locations throughout the Caribbean and abroad.
After some years, she transitioned to fine metals, crafting island-style jewelry featuring precious gemstones, pearls, gold, and silver. This is how her brand, “Zdenka West Indies,” was born.
When Zdenka realized the immense talent on the islands, she decided to start a gallery where artists could showcase their work. Today, the Art Box Gallery in Cole Bay carries pieces from over 30 (mostly Caribbean) artists, including museum-quality art.
Original paintings, reproductions, antic maps, sculptures, ceramics, hand-made jewelry, hand-painted textiles, basketry, and more.
